Antique devotional textile picture depicting Saint Anne teaching the young Virgin Mary to read, worked with an extraordinary level of detail. The figures are built up with fine silk embroidery and layered stitched textiles, with individual folds, borders, floral motifs, veiling and drapery all carefully rendered by hand over the printed or painted ground. The checkerboard floor, architectural backdrop and tiny decorative details give the piece incredible depth up close.
